Jockey Adrie de Vries said that Salute The Soldier could be in with a great chance at the Dubai World Cup after Bahraini trainer Fawzi Nass' charge strode to a fine victory in Round 2 of the Group 2 Al Maktoum Challenge on Thursday night.

Salute The Soldier, the six-year-old from Sepoy, beat Doug Watson's Thegreatcollection by a length to win the feature race, during the fourth meeting of Dubai World Cup Carnival at the Meydan Racecourse.

The Godolphin pairing of trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick landed a treble on the night with Star Safari winning the Emirates SkyCargo handicap, Secret Protector triumphant in the Meydan Trophy conditions, and the Group 2 Al Rashidiya with Zakouski.

'This opens new doors for us,' said de Vries, who notched his 129th winner in the UAE in 1334 rides.

'It was a good try, a brave try by Fawzi. First time he ran, he ran too fresh, he was doing too much. Maybe, he ran a bit flat last time, but it made us make this decision to go a little bit further with him, which was the right one after this win. And hopefully, we can get in, on the big night,' he added.

Capezzano, trained by Emirati handler Salem bin Ghadayer set the pace under Mickael Barzalona with Salute The Soldier, who had finished third in Round 1 of the Al Maktoum Challenge, slotting alongside.

Winners

But as they approached the closing stages of the 1900-metre affair, Salute The Soldier made the move over Capezzano. And although Thegreatcollection swept from the outside and made a late challenge under Patrick Cosgrave, Salute The Soldier held on to take the winning post. Thegreatcollection was denied yet again with the seven-year-old from Saint Anddan finishing second here after being runner-up to Military Law in the first round of the Al Maktoum Challenge.

Dubai Warrior didn't have a great first outing on dirt with the five-year-old from Dansili finishing eighth. Mark Of Approval was a non-runner.

De Vries said that the connections will take a call on whether to run him on Super Saturday on March 6.

'He likes to keep that bit of freshness in him. These are tough races, so we have to see how he comes out of this. He's a horse who quickly gets fresh again and he takes his races well but today was a hard race. And we really have to see how he gets out of this and make a plan from there,' said Vries, who will head off to Riyadh next week to participate in the Saudi Cup.

The Dutchman will be onboard Nass' Simsir in the $20 million Saudi Cup at the King Abdulaziz Racecourse, on February 20.

Racing action had begun in the evening with record eight-time UAE Champion Jockey Tadhg O'Shea guiding Rb Money To Burn to victory in the Group 2 Mazrat Al Ruwayah, the only Purebred Arabian contest on the six-race card.

At the back end of the night, Watson wrapped it up with Motafaawit triumphant in the Emirates Skywards Handicap.
